Fun times. Got all tricked out in a billowing black gown and a lovely hood, trimmed with two bands of hot pink, as if the Faculty of Information Studies (once known as the Faculty of Library and Information Science) wanted to say, "Yes, ours is a profession dominated by women, but this ain't your grandma's library school!" Other faculties got green and grey and yellow and even orange, but we got hot pink. Super.

I'd post a pic but I left the camera at home. However, a photo-proof, snapped as I stood fear-grinning into a camera lens in a corridor in Convocation Hall, clutching my diploma, is in the mail. I'm sure I look as lovely as I did at my undergraduate convocation - i.e. overexposed to the point of looking anemic, my eyes half-closed. Oh, and is it a rule that academic photographers and their assistants have to be complete nitwits? I'm just wondering. Sample comments from the photo crew as the newly graduated shuffled through the corridor:

"Hey, big guy, what's wrong with your gown?"

"Let's get you carrying this diploma like you do it every day."

"Hey, tiger - your hood's on crooked"

"Keep smiling that beautiful smile"

"Hey, halfwit, shut the hell up and get out of my face" (That was me. In my head).

Anyway. So it's done, my formal schooling is over for now. I've got a string of letters after my name and a job and some debt, some grey hair. I sat up some nights writing papers until I started drooling on my keyboard. I ranted plenty. I cried about once a week on average. I laughed a lot. I worked at four different jobs and got loads of experience I wouldn't have had otherwise. I went through about fifteen pairs of shoes. I still have recurring nightmares about writing an exam for a course I've never taken. I grew my hair long. I learned how to do second-level cataloguing. I developed a taste for vodka (these last two are not unrelated). It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.

So, like, yeah. OK. Next!Auto stuff from Mitshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09390189399777195294noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2699795321124816882.post-14544270609808957302012-08-14T02:22:00.001-07:002012-08-14T02:22:38.052-07:00Doesn't look like muchThat's what the doctor told me on Monday when I took myself and my red throat to his office. Another culture was taken, another list of blood tests was checked off.

I didn't bother with the tests, and the culture came back negative for strep and whatever else it is they checked it for. Look, I'm busy. I don't have time to be schlepping around to doctor's offices and labs. I certainly don't have time to deal with condescending doctors. I have a career to manage, I have a course to pass, I have a household to run. Groceries need to be purchased, bills need to be paid, meals need to be prepared, dishes need to be scrubbed, clothes need to be washed, floors need to be swept, cats need to be taken care of. I have a database to build and volunteers who need coordinating and a column to write at some point in the future.

So on Tuesday, I went to work, sore throat and all. New clients must have thought I was there on a community-living placement. I sounded like Kramer, on that episode of Seinfeld where he gets to go to the benefit dinner with Mel Torme because Torme thinks he's, uh, "challenged", but really his mouth is full of Novocaine. "Pwease compweat this fowm," I said to a new employee who wanted to borrow some books from the "libwawy". My voicemail message that day was hi-larious: "Hewwo, 'ou have weached Jen'fer Boorns, Infowmation Shpecialist at..."

Wednesday, throat still sore, although less sore. Thursday, less sore. Friday, less sore. Saturday, almost gone...but still sore. Oh, and I stayed late every night - to catch up in my course. Fun fun fun!

No running, swimming or any strenuous exercise, no alcohol, no citrus (it irritates my throat), soft foods, soup...oh, yeah, it's been a swell time. Throw in a couple of snowstorms and a two-hour commute home three days in a row (complete with 20 minute wait in the bitter cold for a bus that's supposed to come every three minutes) - and you may as well just put a lampshade on your head and call it a party.

I need a vacation. But whatever.

Tomorrow the cats and I are heading to Georgetown for Easter, to hang with the family, including my adorable, darling, chubby-legged vanilla-scented, even-tempered-except-when-he's-hungry-or-just-been-vaccinated nephew Jack. I'm curious to see how Harry and Marmalade are going to react to him, as they have never met a baby human before. They are not quite a year old and still extremely inquisitive about everything. The corridor outside my apartment holds great fascination for them - it may or may not lead to the magical land of Narnia, Maramalde is still investigating. So it will be fun to see what they make of Jack.Auto stuff from Mitshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09390189399777195294noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2699795321124816882.post-82919046044510159552012-02-28T04:50:00.003-08:002012-02-28T04:50:07.836-08:00Lacey Jackson - ResumeHey! In it, he summarizes a number of genetic theories, which all point to the disturbing conclusion that:

"Tests do show an IQ deficit, not just for Africans relative to Europeans, but for Europeans relative to Asians. Economic and cultural theories have failed to explain most of the pattern, and there's strong preliminary evidence that part of it is genetic. It's time to prepare for the possibility that equality of intelligence, in the sense of racial averages on tests, will turn out not to be true."

I cannot deny the possibility that there are racial differences in average intelligence (or rather differences in average intelligence between previously isolated populations, since race is a social, not a biological concept), even though my gut reaction is disgust. I know this is something about which I ought to remain agnostic absent credible, compelling evidence not just because that's the position from which a social scientist, whatever his or her unspoken agendas, ought to begin, but because my emotions on the subject run so damn deep, it's hard to be "objective" (as if anyone can be about a topic as dangerous as it is seductive). Without a certain intellectual coolness, I'm liable to burst out in expletives.Auto stuff from Mitshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09390189399777195294noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2699795321124816882.post-9135245511501714322012-02-27T04:49:00.001-08:002012-02-27T04:49:04.431-08:00Ai Taylor - ResumeAloha! After no small amount of piss taking on his part, he agreed to go and see it. (soft touch) Thankfully we weren’t the oldest people there, we may have been the oldest to go without kids but I have a high shame threshold and a child’s imagination.

I like the Harry Potter books, I enjoyed the two previous films, I don’t own any of the DVDs (the ex took them *ahem*) and I’m not proud.

But wow – what a departure from the usual Harry Potter magic! This film was awesome, very dark, very beautiful camera work, less of the kiddies Harry Potter and more for the adults. Suddenly this magical utopia turned nasty and threatening. Although film was long, the script skirted around loads of plot lines in the book to still produce a worthwhile film.

I am worried (as I’m sure the actors are) that by the next Harry Potter film they’ll all be a bit too old. By Harry Potter 5 it’ll look like the third Grease film. Oh well, they replaced Dumbledor seamlessly and I hear they can do wonders with computers these days…..

One last thing, I fancy Hermione, wrong I know, even "Brown thumbs" Andy gave me an admonishing stare, but hey you’ve got to give it to the girl (in all senses of the word).Auto stuff from Mitshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09390189399777195294noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2699795321124816882.post-54217863258572412892011-12-13T12:15:00.004-08:002011-12-13T12:15:30.906-08:00Voting, only for Borisoting, I’m undecided. Today we have our European and Council elections.

Ever since I became able to vote, I’ve spoiled my ballot. I’ve always voted, I just tend to vote for everyone in protest that they’re all as bad as each other.

It’s a small statement, but at least I’m saying something. No one seems to represent my socialist/fascist stance, the “Stop Tilesey paying tax.” point of view.

I’ll probably do the same this year, at least by voting for everyone I guarantee I’ll win. After all, one of them has to win and if I’ve voted for them it means I predicted the right one – winners all round.

I personally believe that they should make voting a legal requirement as they do in Australia. Over there you get in a serious amount of trouble if you don’t vote, you can even end up in jail. It’s a shame that such harsh measures have to be brought in, but at least then you guarantee that everyone has had their say whether they spoil their ballots or even vote Tory.

Just for the record, the party closest to what my views would be are the Lib Dems, although they put forward some pretty flawed policies at times. I could never vote for Tony, I would even leave labour out when spoiling my ballot. Oh, and I would vote Tory on one condition….. BORIS JOHNSON FOR PRIME MINISTER!

Update: Upon seeing the BNP and the UKIP on the ballot paper for the Euro MP elections (not the council elections thankfully) I decided that it was my constitutional duty to tell them to fuck off. So fuck off you fascist shits, 83 years on and you're as close minded and bigotted as the nazis - you just don't have as good a colour scheme. Oh, and Michael Howard, you having an anti-euro stance probably wasn't the best tactic was it? Wow, I actually voted properly - like a good pro-euro should......Auto stuff from Mitshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09390189399777195294noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2699795321124816882.post-54983084708552966752011-12-13T12:15:00.002-08:002011-12-13T12:15:19.004-08:00Food DiaryBlatantly stealing the concept from the beautiful Miss Fluffy and spurred on by the recent diet discussion, I shall be tacking on a food diary to each of my days posts listing what I ate the day before.

Since exhanging on the flat, I've being eating shite, drinking at least 2 beers a day and haven't been to the gym once. On Monday I decided that I need to get back into my winning ways.... On Tuesday I decided that this would help and on Wednesday I decided to do it.
